Join Hamilton City Brass and guests for an unforgettable evening of music as three bands take the stage!
Hamilton City Brass, led by Musical Director Todd Smith, will transport you to the baroque era with a modern twist. Experience classic pieces reimagined with contemporary genres like rock, funk, and contemporary classical. Reimagined classics include Philip Wilby’s “Fantasia – Three Parts on a Ground,” Jonathan Bates’ “Eternal Source of Light Divine,” featuring 2024 NZ Junior Champion of Champions euphonium soloist Walter Hughes; Todd Rohan Smith’s arrangement of Allegri’s “Miserere mei, Deus,” Wilby’s “Red Priest,” and Ray Farr’s lively “Toccata in D Minor.”
“Red Priest” arranged by Philip Wilby will be a highlight of the evening, a dynamic and imaginative work inspired by the music of Antonio Vivaldi. Known for its fiery energy and complex rhythms, this piece will demonstrate the band’s versatility and technical prowess. Ray Farr’s energetic and thrilling take on Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Toccata in D Minor”. Farr’s arrangement transforms this monumental organ work into a brass powerhouse, full of bold dynamics and virtuosic brilliance.
Hamilton Auxiliary Brass will charm you with a diverse selection of pieces including the atmospheric and dynamic “Dark Side of the Moon” by Paul Lovatt Cooper. Delight in the well-known hymn tune “Colne,” known for its rich, evocative melodies that resonate deeply with audiences. And prepare to be energized by the lively, toe-tapping “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from the musical “Hairspray,” a piece that brings the exuberant spirit of Broadway to the brass stage.
We’re also thrilled to host The Victorian State Youth Brass Band as part of their New Zealand tour, showcasing the best young brass and percussion talent from Victoria, Australia. Don’t miss this terrific concert!
