The Winter Collection 2026: Chaos and Calm

19 Jun – 21 Aug

In The Winter Collection 2026 we explore the twin dialectics of chaos and calm.

In the Winter Collection of 2026, our 42nd exhibition of original art in the gallery, we explore the twin dialectics of chaos and calm. While the former seems ever present in today’s world and the subject of exponential constant concern, the latter unswervingly emerges in the desire to create order and calm.  Inevitably this is also reflected in artistic styles and canonical methods used to portray the world in which we live.

These two concepts, in extremis, underpin the arc of representational art. Once the late nineteenth century impressionists had thrown off the shackles of realism, the explosion of many forms of art were established, giving license to cubism, surrealism, expressionism and abstract work in general.

Unsurprisingly then, chaos can be found in several different art genres and they are well represented in this exhibition.

At the same time, the desire to present form and shape in more a recognizable fashion has not diminished. In  this   exhibition  calm can also seen in the form of art rather than the content of each composition.

Although compositions that are more easily discernible to the eye can be classified as calming, this is not necessarily the case in terms of content and impact. Rich insights can be obtained from either of these categories.   Which painting falls into which category is essentially in the eye of the beholder. Indeed it is perfectly possible that the contributing artists are implicitly calling into question as to whether chaos and calm are stable categories  at all.
