The Elixir of Love

2 Mar

A performance of one of the most beloved operas ever written, now adapted for a family-friendly audience.

Join Opus Orchestra and NZ Opera for one of the most beloved operas ever written, now adapted for a family friendly audience!

For these very special performances as part of the Hamilton Arts Festival, acclaimed local director Jacqueline Coats takes Donizetti and Scribe’s 19th century classic and transports it to a world of Fish and Chip shops, teen idols and ‘The Longest Drink in Town’ in this family-friendly show.

Nemorino is a shy kitchenhand working in a Fish and Chip shop. He is madly in love with Adina, but she has no interest in settling down. However, when the handsome film-star Belcore rolls into town and shows an interest in our independently-spirited heroine, Nemorino must find the courage to express his real feelings. Perhaps, with the help of Dr Dulcamara’s magical elixirs, he can transform himself in time…

See a cast of rising Aotearoa opera stars and Hamilton Kirikiriroa and Bay of Plenty’s own Opus Orchestra perform this comic gem in an abridged, English language version, conducted by Peter Walls.

Performances at 1 PM and 3 PM (each performance about 1 hour in length)
