Art and stories from managed isolation

Hamilton Kirikiriroa has three hotels operating as managed isolation facilities – Distinction Hamilton, Jet Park Hotel Hamilton Airport, and Ibis Tainui Hamilton.

In November 2020, Accor Hotels commissioned Ruby Jones to record her interpretations of managed isolation. Ruby is the artist whose iconic image in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks was seen across the world.

For this exhibition, Ruby created 14 artworks, inspired by 28 interviews with Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) staff and messages from grateful returnees.

This exhibition includes these artworks, together with written notes, artworks and anonymised letters of thanks from those experiencing managed isolation.

A chance to pause and reflect on the sad, funny and emotional stories from New Zealand’s managed isolation system through this unique exhibition.
