Te Karanga o Te Tau Hou - Matariki Dawn Ceremony

This dawn ceremony weaves karakia, waiata, and reflection into a space where past, present, and future meet beneath the Matariki.

As the stars of Matariki rise, the new year begins..
Join Te Ohu Whakaita as mist drifts across Turtle Lake and the voices of kaikaranga carry through the morning air. Led by Ngaati Wairere and Tainui Kaumaatua, this dawn ceremony weaves karakia, waiata, and reflection into a space where past, present, and future meet beneath Matariki.
This is a time to remember those who came before, reset our intentions, and step into the year ahead with purpose. Afterwards, stay for a shared kai, koorero on Te Paki o Matariki and the maramataka, enjoy a Matariki animation, plus live music from the Harmonic Resonators.
As we look to the year ahead, let us lead with care and courage, and build strong foundations for those who follow. Whether you’re returning or joining us for the first time, Te Karanga o Te Tau Hou is a morning worth being part of.
The opening ceremony is free to the public (5:30-6:30am), while registration is essential for the breakfast event (7am onwards). Stay tuned for the Breakfast sign-up link.
