Join Hamilton City Brass for a story-time concert of ‘Romeo & Juliet’. The story of the doomed romance between two lovers from feuding families is one of the most famous love stories ever written. Hamilton City Brass under the baton of new Musical Director Todd Smith will weave unforgettable music through the narrated tale and tragedy of forbidden love.
William Shakespeare’s story of star-crossed lovers has inspired classical composers for more than a century – including Tchaikovsky’s orchestral work ‘Romeo & Juliet – Fantasy Overture’; and ‘The Montagues and the Capulets’ from Prokofiev’s ballet ‘Romeo & Juliet’.
Hollywood too, has long been enamoured with the tragic love story and our ‘Star Crossed’ programme features music from three of the more well-known adaptions. Italian composer Nino Rota’s ‘A Time for Us’ featured in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film while ‘O Verona’ featured in the opening of Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 modernised ‘Romeo & Juliet’ adaption. The 1961 musical romantic drama ‘West Side Story’ was the famous adaption of the Broadway musical of the same title featuring music by Leonard Bernstein. Eric Crees’ arrangement ’Suite from “West Side Story”’ brings the famous story and musical to life.
Further highlights include ‘The Dreaded Hook & Groove’ and Purcell’s ‘Dido’s Lament’ featuring flugel horn Lisa Marshall. Lisa joins euphonium Ross McAdam for a beautiful duet while euphonium Walter Hughes will delight with ‘The Great Race’, from “In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen” by Peter Graham.
Don’t miss this evening with Hamilton’s premier brass band featuring beautiful, exciting and emotive music inspired directly and indirectly by ‘Romeo & Juliet’.
