Print & Stitch: make your own zippered pouch

4 Mar

To learn how to sew a simple zipped pouch from start to finish using thrifted fabric.

Join us in welcoming experienced sewer and creative Katie Hansen to the Whare.

She is bringing her skills to a small-group sewing wānanga designed for adults [18+] who are curious about learning to sew. This beginner-friendly workshop offers the chance to complete a simple, functional project in one supportive session.

We’ll begin with a gentle welcome to the space, then move into choosing from a selection of thrifted fabrics and planning your pouch. You’ll be guided through sewing basics, building confidence with the machine, and constructing your pouch step by step — including an easy, approachable way to insert a zip. There will also be time to print, embellish, and personalise your finished piece.

Participants will mostly work independently, with moments of shared learning, collective problem-solving, and encouragement throughout. The workshop is facilitated by an experienced tutor and held in a calm, supportive environment where learning is unhurried and everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace.
