“If it wasn’t for the waka, we wouldn’t be here today.”
– Sir Hek Busby on the central importance of waka and star navigation to Maaori
The award-winning documentary “Whetū Mārama – Bright Star” tells the story of Sir Hekenukumai Ngaiwi Puhipi (also known as ‘Hek’ Busby) and his significance for Maaori in reigniting their wayfinding DNA. At age 50 the former bridge builder embraced waka building and traditional Maaori navigation.
Directors Toby Mills and Aileen O’Sullivan spent 15 years developing the documentary alongside Busby, who died in 2019.
