Live action scrimshaw: printmaker Gemma Reid
“Scrimshaw: scratching the surface” features an ostrich egg from 1775 illustrated with ships traversing the Cape of Good Hope
Our exhibition “Scrimshaw: scratching the surface” features an ostrich egg from 1775 illustrated with ships traversing the Cape of Good Hope. Drawing on this as inspiration, we offer a rare opportunity to observe an artist at work and get close to the action.
Watch as printmaker Gemma Reid applies a mix of traditional and contemporary techniques to an ostrich egg and designs a modern-day scrimshaw.
Thank you to Hamilton Zoo for supplying the ostrich eggs for this demonstration.
