New Beginnings

A pivotal body of work for this talented local artist, an exhibition of paintings that 
our natural world while reflecting her efforts to ‘re-emerge and give thanks for 
each new day.

Trish is a Waikato based mum of two. After being diagnosed with PND 9 years ago, it was suggested she take up something she has always wanted to do or missed doing. It was a natural choice to revisit a favourite pastime and begin her journey into the art world. Trish has always loved sketching and painting. With a passion for bringing native birds of NZ to life through brush or pencil, Trish especially enjoys highlighting the simplicity and beauty nature has to offer. 

New Beginnings is pivotal body of work for me. 

From picking up my first brush at a young age, I have always enjoyed the freedom of creating something uniquely mine. I especially enjoy native subjects, with an affinity with birds and their symbolic wings of freedom which tease the imagination.

Whether it’s breaking out of a shell, sitting in quiet contemplation on a branch, or outstretched wings in flight, the beauty of their plumage and the incredible strength it takes to fly is inspiring. 
A natural reminder that no matter what the situation is we can lift ourselves to greater heights.

I have no formal training in art but credit my interest in painting and creating to an inherent talent from my Dad, local artist Brian Torrey. He has inspired and encouraged my confidence to grow my own wings and take this step into the community space and show my work.  

For these pieces I have used fluid acrylics and pastel pencils.

I enjoy sketching, developing my work and watching the pieces come to life. Using colour with a little fauna to enhance, without taking away from the subject, I have tried to capture in nature what we tend to miss in everyday life. 

The beauty that surrounds us every day.
