Koorero Toi: Hemi Macgregor – Toi is Rongoaa
Artist Hemi Macgregor will discuss with Curator Maree Mills his works which feature in our exhibition Toi is Rongoaa.
In conversation with curator Maree Mills, Hemi Macgregor will discuss his artworks featured in Waikato Museum’s exhibition, Toi is Rongoaa. Attendance is free for this artist talk but please register online as numbers are limited.
Hemi Macgregor (Ngaati Rakaipaaka, Ngaati Kahungunu, Ngaai Tūhoe) works primarily in painting and installation, his sculptural works often re-presenting and repurposing everyday objects.
In his current art practice Macgregor exemplifies the cultural importance of maintaining healthy sustainable relationships with the natural environment and consider how this approach contributes to people’s cultural and spiritual wellbeing. To inform this practice Macgregor explores puuraakau/customary narratives that express the relationships sky and water, sky and earth, the origins of light and the coming of spring and summer as a time of abundance.
Open now at Waikato Museum, Toi is Rongoaa celebrates fourteen contemporary Maaori artists who believe in the importance of creative practice to their wellbeing. The invited artists have been supported by Creative New Zealand to make new work and share this essential kaupapa with our community.
