Curator Statement by Genevieve Southcombe
Welcome to our Art Exhibition ‘How We See It’, where the creativity and individuality of our students take centre stage. Each artwork on display reflects the unique perspectives and personal stories of our talented students.

The ‘My sense of belonging’ art was inspired by the famous artist Hundertwasser. He uses faces, eyes, onion turret roofs, lollipop trees, curved lines and colour in his art to express creativity and so did we. Students created pieces showing local landmarks and buildings that are special to them. You may recognise some environmental and structural landmarks from the Matamata and surrounding areas. During this creation, students were encouraged to express their pieces through the mixed mediums of blending Oil Pastel, using gradients in water colour while keeping the colour bold. Curved lines and repeated patterns were also used.

Lino prints were individual and the skill of using thick and thin lines were encouraged. In some pieces colour was used introduced using the chine-collé technique of printing over torn or cut coloured tissue or thin paper that is attached to the base page being printed. Students opted to use borders to frame the work and cut out background if desired. It was the first time many students had tried lino cutting to create a print.

‘Abstract art’ style paintings are inspired by Paul Klee. His use of complementary colours were encouraged and repetition of shapes were overlaid in a balanced composition. Watercolour with salt applied created texture.

Finally displayed is ‘The world as I see it.’ A group of students expressed their world as they see it. There was no set criteria for this – just use of creativity to explore ideas about how they see the world and experiment with mediums as they wished. Each picture has a story to tell and you can read about this alongside each individual piece.

We hope you enjoy this celebration of identity, self-expression and creativity.
