Common Thread brings together a series of embroidery works from Alice Alva’s ongoing investigation of textile drawings. Alva’s work unravels traditional embroidery functions and processes, where textiles are still viewed as marginal disciplines. These small-format works consider the often intimate, economic realities of craft-based practices – the peripheral nature of textile work within the broader value-system of visual culture.
Alice Alva (she/her) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and art educator based in Kirikiriroa, Aotearoa – New Zealand. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Australia and New Zealand, and is held in both private and public art collections, including the Waikato Museum and the Wallace Arts Trust.
