Cold Listening

A brand new exhibition shown at RAMP gallery featuring artist Jonathan Kay
Cold Listening is an exhibition by Jonathan Kay that explores the fragility of our landscapes through the study of Haupapa/Tasman Glacier. Kay began exploring these glaciers as a way of making sense of environments in Aotearoa impacted by climate change. Over nine years and several visits, he has spent time on the glaciers—observing the lakes and icebergs that carve off during melting, and following the streams and rivers that connect this water system. Through a range of photographic interventions Cold Listening offers a deeper look at these vulnerable landscapes.
Jonathan poetically documents the glacier by both looking at and being in the environment. What emerges is a dialogue, mediated by Kay’s photographic processes, between the body of the artist and the body of the glacier; a dialogue that speaks of the inextricable yet increasingly fragile connections between human and more-than-human worlds.
Jonathan is a photographic artist and lecturer in photography living in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. His practice focuses on blurring the boundaries of art and science to render the unseen and challenge notions of landscape. Recent exhibitions include ‘Cold Listening’ (The Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki), ‘Icebound’ (Hastings Art Gallery), ‘Cryosphere’ (Jhana Millers Gallery + Ashburton Art Gallery).
