Cantando Choir "Songs of the Universal"

26 May

CANTANDO CHOIR presents SONGS of the UNIVERSAL With special guests BEL SUONO CHOIR from Waikato Diocesan School for Girls.

Cantando’s first concert of the 2024 season is a little different. It features the works of a variety of composers from around the world: US-based Norwegian Ola Gjeilo; Briton Michael Tippet; Welshman Karl Jenkins; David Hamilton from New Zealand and talented young local composer, Fergus Byett. Truly a universal collection of accomplished composers exploring themes of human relationships with each other, with family, with nature, the land of one’s birth and with one’s spiritual home.

The concert takes its title from a piece by Ola Gjeilo. “We have not sung works by Gjeilo before,” says Cantando’s Musical Director, Kolitha Jayatunge, “and choir members have found this piece challenging. But the effort they have put in to master it has been richly rewarded by the beauty of Gjeilo’s moving work. We invite our audience to enjoy the experience of music which may be new to them, as well as some of the classics inthe choral repertoire, such as the Spirituals from Michael Tippet’s A Child of our Time.”

Joining Cantando for this concert is the award-winning Bel Suono choir and we look forward to providing a performance opportunity for these lovely young voices. Cantando is also delighted to be reprising Te Ngākau, E, a work commissioned by the choir from Fergus Byett in 2023.

Tickets: Adult $30, Concession $25, Student $15, Child $10, Family (2 adults 2 children). Email info@cantando.org.nz for tickets.
