Event: 3pm-6pm Thursday, 29 Feb

Exhibition runs: 15 February – 31 March, 2024

Artists: Aimee Ratana / Ayesha Green / Hariata Ropata-Tangahoe / Margaret Aull / Teuila Fatupaito

Join us to hear from five writers who have been invited to respond to each artists’ work, come along to hear their creative interpretations. Followed by kai and celebration from 4:30pm.

The exhibition brings together five wāhine artists who have had a relationship with the Wintec at different points in their creative journey. We look backwards and forwards in time to bring the complex paths of individual artists into relationship via place and memory. The narratives of the individual works connect via whānau and tupuna stories, wāhine perspectives. Ayesha Green has painted her mother, framed by her marae, her gaze shoots left with an intensity and humour, or perhaps some reservation. Hariata Ropata-Tangahoe’s work is aflame with putiputi (flowers), a strange manu (bird) staring us down in this re-reading of Matariki. Ramp sits at the foot of Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa, if you walk up the hill you can look down at the steep cut through that was made almost 100 years ago. 100 years ago, the first technical college was set on this site. People have been coming and going and learning here for much longer, and this will go on and on. What will it look like in another hundred years? This class of ’24 is made up of diverse voices, who each have their own story of working through and out of this institution of learning.

Supported by the Fletcher Collection and Chandra Family Trust
